SELLING SPELLING – CORRECTLY SPELL WORDS WITH LONG AND SHORT VOWELS
VOWEL VOYAGE
Purpose
Using previously learned knowledge to practice spelling words with long and short vowels.
Preparation
- Provide paper, scissors, crayons, and four strips of paper with the numerals one through four written on them.
- Reproduce copies of the Vowel Voyage game board in quantities sufficient to meet the needs of the group.
- Place the numbered paper strips face-down on the table.
Procedure
- This game is for two, three, or four players.
- Each player designs a marker, cuts it out, and then places it on the game board.
- The first player draws a number and moves the correct number of spaces. For example, if the number says 3, the player moves three squares. If the space stopped on is marked “a,” the player must spell a word that contains the short“a”sound. If the word is correctly spelled, the player moves forward one space. If the word is misspelled, the player must move back one space.
- The game continues with players taking turns until one player has moved around the board three times to be declared winner of the game.
