Pumpkins A-Plenty
Studying our individual pumpkins is always interesting. Each pumpkin is different. This activity will allow children to sort and classify by many pumpkin attributes.
Materials needed:
a variety of pumpkins
measuring tape
scale
Discuss the different properties of a pumpkin with the children. How does the outside appear? Is it rough or smooth? Are the pumpkins the same color? Do you think that they weigh the same? After the discussion about the differences and similarities of the pumpkins, measure the outside of the pumpkin to discover the circumference. Divide the children into groups to measure the remaining pumpkins. Who has the biggest? Who has the smallest? Conduct the same experiment with the scale. Who has the heaviest? Who has the lightest? Predict sinking or floating.
