Procedure:
Sing the Apple Annie song on page 22.
Review with the children that Annie Apple likes apples. Explain they will pretend to pick apples from Annie’s tree.
Pass a mat, unifex cubes (apples) and container to children. Explain the cubes are apples. Place them in the tree. The bowl is the apple basket. Place it next to the last line on the mat. Model for children using an overhead projector.
Choose a two phoneme word from the list. Example: bee Say the word slowly, articulate each sound. Repeat again, but on each sound bring an apple down and place on horizontal lines under the tree.
Count the apples and explain to the children there are two sounds we hear in the word bee. Point to each apple and say each sound. Then using a sweep motion from left to right, blend sounds together, pick up apples and place in basket.
Choose another word and repeat the procedure.
Extension Activity:

Letter/Sound Connection:
Write the letters on the cubes for designated word. Repeat the procedure.
