DIXIE CHICKS
“We finally got on the front row of an awards show,” said Natalie Maines. The show was the 2000 Country Music Awards. It was the first time the Dixie Chicks were given front row seats. They were surprised.
Their music is a patchwork quilt of sounds. It ranges from good ol’ honky tonk harmony to high-energy pop/rock. Natalie Maines, Martie Seidel, and Emily Robison make up the Chicks. Martie and Emily are sisters. Martie has been playing the fiddle since age five. Emily excels at the Dobro, banjo, and guitar. Maines is the lead singer. These girls are not snobs. They thrill their audiences with their music. They take the show into the crowd. Sometimes the Chicks even climb to the “cheap seats.” They know how to get a crowd singing and dancing. They love what they’re doing, and their fans feel it. “Our fans are our most prized possession,” said Natalie.
They had come a long way from playing for tips on a street corner in Dallas. The Dixie Chicks took top awards three years in a row. In 2000, their album Fly won Grammys and country music awards. They hit the road with a tour lasting five months.
The Chicks took time out from their tour for two weddings. In June, Natalie and Adrian Pasdar were married in Las Vegas. Their wedding took place in A Little White Wedding Chapel. A short time later, Emily married Charlie Robison. Natalie and Martie sang Cowboy Take Me Away.
