Introduction
The tradition of quilting has been passed down in my family for generations. My mother is a quilter, and so was my grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother! I learned to sew at a young age, and I was also taught to appreciate the fine art of creating and preserving quilts. In my family, I have the awesome responsibility of being the “keeper of the quilts.” I have new and old family quilts everywhere.They are hung on rods in my living room, placed over banisters, and tucked away in cupboards. Some quilts are so old and tattered that we have taken pieces of them and preserved them inside picture frames.

A few months ago,we had to evacuate our home for a hurricane. I packed our car with our most important possessions to get ready to leave town. First, I packed the old family quilts and our picture albums.There was almost no space left for anything else.

My daughter came out to the car with her load of favorite possessions. On the top of her stack was a quilt her grandmother had made and a baby quilt given to her by her aunt,Marianne. I am glad that my daughter treasures quilts and the time-honored tradition of quilting as much as I do. As your students work on the quilt block activity pages in this book, I hope that they learn to appreciate the wonderful art of quilting, too.

How to Use This Book
Encourage each student to design a picture quilt block that depicts an event in his or her life. Have students cut the picture-block shapes out of different colors of construction paper and glue them onto a background square of construction paper.Then, place the squares together on a wall to make a class quilt.

Books
Quilt-Block History of Pioneer Days, by Mary Cobb (The Millbrook Press, 1995).This delightful book tells the history of the pioneer days through quilts. It includes pictures of dozens of quilt blocks and information about them, as well as projects that kids can make.

Traditional Quilts for Kids to Make, by Barbara J. Eikmeier (The Patchwork Place, 2001).This book includes eight traditional quilt plans and 15 traditional blocks designed especially for children to make. It teaches quiltmaking basics from choosing fabrics to using a sewing machine, to rotary cutting and hand-quilting.
